The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is endowed with extensive freshwater resources, including lakes, rivers, and basins that play a crucial role in the ecological balance, economic development, and livelihoods of millions of its inhabitants. However, climate change poses significant threats to these vital water bodies, exacerbating existing environmental challenges and introducing new vulnerabilities.

This study aims to assess the multifaceted impacts of climate change on the lakes, rivers, and basins of the DRC, focusing on alterations in hydrological cycles, water quality deterioration, and biodiversity loss. Rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns are leading to increased evaporation rates and altered flow regimes, which in turn affect the availability of freshwater resources. Furthermore, the intensification of extreme weather events, such as floods and droughts, is disrupting the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems and threatening the livelihoods of communities that depend on these water bodies for fishing, agriculture, and domestic use.

Additionally, the study highlights the socio-economic implications of climate change impacts on freshwater resources, emphasizing the need for adaptive management strategies that incorporate sustainable practices in water resource management. The findings underscore the urgency of implementing climate-resilient policies and conservation efforts to safeguard the ecological health of lakes, rivers, and basins in the DRC.

In conclusion, addressing the impacts of climate change on freshwater ecosystems in the DRC is essential for ensuring the sustainability of natural resources and the well-being of local communities. Collaborative efforts among government agencies, NGOs, and local stakeholders are imperative to develop and implement effective strategies that mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and promote sustainable development in the region.
