Water, the elixir of life, flows through our veins and nourishes our souls. Its crystalline clarity and life-giving properties make it the most precious resource on Earth. In India, particularly in the culturally significant region of Braj, surface water bodies known as Kunds have held profound spiritual and ecological importance. These ancient water bodies, dating back centuries from the 5th to the 15th century, have served as vital sources of freshwater and as sacred sites for pilgrims. There were once more than 1000 Kunds in Braj. However, in recent times, many of these Kunds have suffered severe degradation due to anthropogenic pressures, including pollution, sedimentation, and encroachment. Priya Kund, a culturally significant water body in Barsana, is a prime example of this decline. It falls within the Yamuna River basin. These Braj water bodies are located 107-325 miles from the Yamuna River. Water quality analysis, sediment characterization, biodiversity assessment and GIS study of Priya kund revealed significant pollution including elevated nutrient levels and a decline in aquatic biodiversity. To address these issues, ecological measures have been implemented to reduce phosphate and nitrate content in Kund water, agricultural and surface runoffs entering the Kund, and treat Abhishekha water and domestic sewage using Soil Scape Filters. The restoration efforts have yielded significant positive outcomes, including improved water quality, habitat restoration, enhanced aesthetic appeal, and revitalized cultural and spiritual significance of the Kund. This study underscores the importance of a scientific approach to water body restoration. By combining traditional knowledge and modern techniques, we can effectively preserve our cultural and ecological heritage. The restoration of Priya Kund serves as a model for the conservation of other sacred water bodies in India and around the world.
