John Paterson
John Paterson (JP) is a geologist, with academic interests in geomorphology, and the fluvial processes of erosion, and sedimentology. He is a New Zealand based forester, inventor, deer farmer, author, sustainable farming advisor and applied research project initiator and enabler. Out in the NZ mountains or on his deer farm, John the geomorphologist is always observing the effect of natural fluvial processes in action particularly the awesomeness of high intensity rainstorm runoff events.
He advocates that such episodic storms with their loads of sediment, nutrients and pathogens carried off-farm, are an enormous opportunity and we should dare to intercept and treat these high intensity rainstorm runoff events. John has over 15 years of hands-on interception of runoff with Detainment Bunds PS120 (DB) and gauging of the inherent risks. His initiation of on-going ‘applied’ science to realise the full water quality benefits of Detainment Bunds for reduction of storm water contaminant load has positive implications for improving the sustainability of pastoral farming in New Zealand.
